Sheila Higgins
FIT Teacher

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Mrs. Sheila Higgins, and I am a Kindergarten F.I.T. teacher at Discovery School. As a FIT teacher, I support the students both in the classroom and by reinforcing skills during small group instruction sessions. The children participate in pull-out groups to help increase their understanding of concepts that are being taught in their classroom. During the pull-out sessions, the children participate in two different types of intervention:
Prevention - This beginning of the year prevention program is designed to support the children as they are learning letters and sounds through the use of multi-sensory activities.
Leveled Literacy Intervention - This program is a small group supplementary intervention designed to increase reading levels by providing skills and strategies that the students can utilize in their for their independent reading. This program begins in January.

I have been a teacher in North Hanover Township Schools for thirty-five years. I started my teaching career in K-4 at Discovery School and then moved to Atlantis where I taught first grade and second grade. The last thirteen years I have been part of the Basic Skills team (now F.I.T.), starting out at Columbia School. then at C. B. Lamb, and now back at Discovery. I received my teaching degree from Trenton State College (now known as TCNJ) and my masters degree from Marygrove College. I am married with three grown children, and two golden retriever lab mix dogs.
